Rudi Laermans -
Radionica 1 – Suvremenost suvremenog plesa
od 10:00 do 14:00 sati

O Radionici:
Radionica 1 - ‘Suvremenost suvremenog plesa’

Theorizing and Making Contemporary Dance (Amsterdam, Valiz, 2015.).

Rudi Laermans - Workshop 1 – The contemporaneity of contemporary dance
from 10:00 AM to 14:00 PM

About the Workshop:
Workshop 1 – ‘The contemporaneity of contemporary dance’

From a genealogical point of view, the basic contours of much present dance can be traced back to ‘the moment of Judson’ and its questioning of the various parameters informing the common sense understanding of dance, such as the assumption that daily gestures fall outside the scope of legitimate choreography. The live character of theatre dance offers a quite different angle to delineate that very same contemporaneity: the performer(s) and the spectator(s) are literally contemporaries during a performance. Still a different perspective follows from the possible relationship between dance and its wider socio-cultural environment. Contemporary dance may indeed re/articulate with more or less criticality the dominant forms of self-understanding through a choreographically informed ‘redistribution of the sensible’ (Jacques Rancière).

Rudi Laermans is Professor of Social Theory at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Leuven, Belgium. From its early beginnings in 1995, he was also a guest teacher at P.A.R.T.S., the Brussels-based international dance school directed by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. He has published widely in both national and international journals and books within the areas of social theory, cultural sociology and the sociology of the arts. Also active as a critic and essayist, he has written numerous articles on contemporary dance. He recently published an encompassing study on contemporary dance, Moving Together. Theorizing and Making Contemporary Dance (Amsterdam, Valiz, 2015).
